Over 100 guests raised nearly $25,000 for a Swaziland Sponsor-a-Child reception at Lenz Design Studio in Chicago on Sunday, November 1. It was the third annual event hosted in the Windy City but this year’s gathering focused entirely on the Sponsor-a-Child program.

The afternoon reception, which was also attended by the Provincial of the Stella Maris Province, Sr. Pietrina Raccuglia, MSC, included many profiles and posters of the children cared for by St. Philip’s Mission as well as touching presentations by Sr. Barbara Staley, MSC, and Sr. Diane Dalle Molle, MSC, as well as the former United States Ambassador to Swaziland Maurice Parker. Guests also had the opportunity to make donations and purchase magnificent wishing baskets that were hand-made in Swaziland.

Joining the Missionary Sisters from Swaziland were their colleagues Mzamo and Thandiwe who work at St. Philip’s Mission and gave a firsthand account on what a difference Cabrini has made in the lives of countless orphaned children in Swaziland.

St. Philip’s Mission is located in southern Swaziland in an extremely remote area characterized by periods of drought and high rates of malaria, AIDS and TB, and encompasses approximately 5,000 acres. The mission house contains a primary school, a high school, a daycare center, a vocational school, a maternity unit, a clinic with associated outreach station and a boarding hostel for AIDS orphans. The Mission also provides training in carpentry, gardening as well as practical training for nurses.

A special thank you for their tremendous efforts and generosity is extended to the event’s committee which included Sr. Barbara Staley, MSC, Sr. Diane Dalle Molle, MSC, Von Shade-Zeldow, Carol Christiansen, Ben Lenz, Theodore Michalke, Erika Baehr and Maureen Baehr.
