More than 600 guests gathered inside historic Cipriani Wall Street to celebrate the leadership of former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani and his wife, Judith, NBC anchor Katie Couric, and podiatrist, Dr. Rock Positano, who were all presented with the Spirit of Cabrini award. The night also marked a milestone for the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who were presented with the Sr. Josephine Tsuei Cabrini Mission award. A new Cabrini Mission Foundation logo was introduced to enhance the identity of the Foundation, as well as to unify all the Institutions under one recognizable brand. The heart symbolizes compassion, partnership, and openness. Red reflects love and passion, and gold signifies celebration and joy. Together, the logo speaks of the presence of God. Well-known actor, Joe Piscopo, emceed with tremendous charm, garnering laughs with anecdotes of growing up in an Italian-American household. Kathy Dolgin, aka High Voltage, presented the first award of the night to her friend, Katie Couric. Ms. Couric and Ms. Dolgin have helped the students of Mother Cabrini High School in Washington Heights, NY, to develop healthy lifestyles for the future. Ms. Couric was also happy to relay the wonderful news that Cabrini High School in New Orleans would soon reopen its doors on November 8th. She ended her remarks with a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson entitled Success as her advice to all Cabrini students, some of whom attended the gala that evening. Sr. Lucille Souza, MSC presented the Rudolph and Judith Giuliani with the next award of the night, highlighting their compassion as a reflection of Mother Cabrinis work. Mr. Giuliani thanked his wife for introducing him to the work of the Cabrinian institutions. Like Katie Couric, Mrs. Giuliani has also been deeply involved with the girls of Mother Cabrini High School. In fact, she revealed in her speech that she is often unable to describe their achievements without feeling emotional. The girls have endured many hardships in life and yet, they are all on their way to succeeding. The girls themselves are the best salespeople for the high school, she said. Dr. Rock Positano was presented his award by longtime friend, Joe Piscopo. Dr. Positano was raised in a household that espoused the virtues of Mother Cabrini. His mother often advised him to turn to Mother Cabrini to help him with his problems. Dr. Positano declared that women, like Mother Cabrini and his own mother, have the true influence in this world and should be celebrated. A successful live auction followed, hosted by auctioneer D.R. Dietch, in which one-of-a-kind experiences like golf with Mr. and Mrs. Giuliani, and a backstage tour of NBC Today Show studio, were featured. Dan Rubino, Chairperson of the Foundations Board of Trustees, presented the final award of the night to the Missionary Sisters. Sr. Lucille Souza, MSC accepted on their behalf and gave a heartfelt presentation on how the work of the Sisters is a reflection of the support they have received from friends and benefactors of all the Cabrini institutions. More than $700,000 was raised by the Foundation and will be used to fund many of the Cabrini programs for healing, teaching, and caring in 2006. The Gala was made possible through the generosity of the honorees, guests, and the Board of Trustees for the Foundation. Our sincerest thanks to everyone for their hard work and support! |
