A Dream Comes True

In the movie Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner plays a character who is inspired to build a baseball field in the middle of his cornfield in Iowa. “If you build it, they will come” were the words that moved him to risk financial peril to build a field that would become a haven for players from baseball’s past. The cornfield then became a field where men’s dreams came true.

On June 24, a Mass of dedication was offered for the opening of a new center for the Save Our Street Children Foundation, Inc. (SOSCFI). Unlike Costner’s character in the movie, Hoover Agyao, Executive Director of SOSCFI, and the Board did not hear voices. They were, however, led by the same dream. For over three years SOSCFI has been functioning without a permanent center; the programs and services that were offered were hampered by the lack of space and centralization. After much negotiating, fundraising, and searching, SOSCFI has finally found a place to call their own.

In this case, however, there was no need to build but rather to purchase and renovate. Funds are still needed to complete most of the renovations and donations can be made through the Foundation at www.cabrinifoundation.org or by calling 212.995.7003.

Presiding at the Mass and ribbon-cutting ceremony was Bishop Carlito Cenzon, Board member Fr. Benny Casteneda, and Fr. Vince Castro, pastor of the local parish, Don Bosco. In addition to the over 100 children and parents served by SOSCFI, the staff, local MSCs and Board of Trustees, the ceremony was also attended by Sr. Joan McGlinchey, MSC General Councilor, Mayor Yaranon of Baguio, civic leaders and various heads of civic, social, and humanitarian organizations in Baguio City. Many of these leaders used the opportunity to either present or pledge monetary donations for programs or scholarships.

“The appreciation for SOSCFI, the outpouring of support and above all, the hope of new life and vision for SOSCFI and its beneficiaries made for a very moving ceremony and an historic moment,” pointed out Sr. Patricia Spillane, MSC.

The generosity of many made that day possible. With the new venue there is much for which to look forward as plans and strategies are made. For many children and families in Baguio City, their hopes and dreams seemed impossible, but now with SOSCFI’s new space and the prayers and support of the Cabrini family there is a place for them to go— a center where dreams can come true.
